Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons (21-4-1-3) defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by the final score of 6-3 Saturday night at the MassMutual Center, extending the team's point streak to nine games. The point streak - which dates back to December 7 - matches a franchise record, set in 1996-97 and equaled in 1997-98.
Five Falcons players recorded multi-point efforts, led by forward Jonathan Marchessault who tallied two goals - including the game-winner - and an assist. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound centerman notched a power-play goal at 8:47 of the second period, giving Springfield a 2-1 lead, and found the net again at 6:14 of the third period to extend the team's advantage to 4-1. His second scores was his team-leading fourth game-winning goal this season.
Patrick McNeill also recorded three points with a goal and two assists. At 15:40 of the third period, the veteran defenseman fired a slap shot from the left-wing point that beat Bridgeport netminder Anders Nilsson to put the Falcons ahead 5-2.
Blake Parlett (one goal, one assist), Tim Miller (two assists) and Spencer Machacek (two assists) were the other three Falcons with multiple points Saturday night.
Jeremy Smith made 21 saves on 24 shots to earn his 14th win of the season in net for Springfield. The Dearborn, Michigan native is now 3-0-0-1 since returning from his recall by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Nilsson made 20 saves on 26 shots for Bridgeport.
Each team score on the power play. Springfield went 1-for-2, while Bridgeport went 1-for-4.
Earning two points Saturday, Springfield extended its point streak to nine games. The team had only accomplished that feat twice before and not since March of 1998. The Falcons originally set the record one year before, from October 19, 1996 to November 16, 1996.
The Falcons return to action at the MassMutual Center Sunday, December 29 to host the Providence Bruins at 3:00 p.m.
