South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Estero, FL Steve Saviano scored two goals and added an assist as Florida beat the South Carolina Stingrays 4-1 in front of 5,179 at Germain Arena. The loss snapped a three game unbeaten streak for the Stingrays, who fell to 22-20-11 on the season as the Everblades improved to 35-17-3.
The Stingrays came into the game unbeaten in Florida (2-0-1) but could not continue the streak.
"We weren't going to be able to sneak up on Florida tonight," commented Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "They worked hard with all three lines and got some timely goaltending."
Reggie Berg gave the Everblades a 1-0 first period lead with his seventh goal in 12 games when he knocked in an Ernie Hartlieb rebound at 2:54 of the first. The Rays could not cash in on five power play opportunities in the first period as Phil Osaer made eight saves for the Everblades.
Trevor Johnson tied the game early in the second period when he took stepped in front of an Everblades pass in the high slot and beat Osaer with a right corner wrist shot. Steve Saviano scored from behind the Rays net moments later to give Florida back the momentum and Phil Aucoin rapped in a rebound at the 11:10 mark to but Florida up 3-1 through two periods.
Saviano scored his second of the game in to an empty net in the third with the Rays enjoying a six on four power play.
Davis Parley took the loss for the Stingrays racking up 39 saves on 42 shots.
"Davis played another outstanding game for us here tonight," added Fitzsimmons. "We just couldn't give him the support at the other end of the rink."
Notes: Robin Gomez and Marty Clapton watched last night's action from the stands. Gomez was suspended two games by the ECHL on Monday for his actions in Sunday's win over Charlotte. Clapton had concussion like symptoms. Ryan Finnerty left the game after being slashed in the first period and did not return.
The Stingrays will take on the Everblades tonight at Germain Arena before traveling to play the Ice Pilots in Pensacola on Friday evening. South Carolina will begin a three game home stand on Tuesday, March 7th against Pensacola.
