San Diego Gulls News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Mark Wires has been named a runner-up for In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week honors, the ECHL announced Tuesday. Wires earned eight points in four games last week, helping the San Diego Gulls to a three-game winning streak.

Wires began the week Wednesday with two goals and one assist in a tough 5-4 loss to the Utah Grizzlies. He notched one assist Friday in a 3-0 shutout against the Phoenix Roadrunners before being held off the scoresheet Saturday in a 2-1 overtime win against Utah. Wires followed that up however with a career high four points (2g, 2a) in a 5-2 victory over the Stockton Thunder Sunday.

His totals for the four games last week were three goals and five assists, with one game-winning and one power-play marker. Wires was also a +6.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 23-year old from North York Ontario was acquired by San Diego from Phoenix on Jan. 9 in exchange for Chet Ferreira. Before signing with Phoenix Wires appeared in eight games for the Trenton Titans. In 44 games split between all three teams, he has accumulated 27 points (9g, 18a) and 49 penalty minutes.

Wires split last season, his rookie year, between the Texas Wildcatters and Central Hockey League's Laredo Bucks. In 37 games for Texas he notched eight points (3g, 5a) and 23 penalty minutes. In 29 games for Laredo, he recorded 19 points (7g, 12a) and 24 penalty minutes. Wires also appeared in 16 playoff games for the Bucks, registering 10 points (3g, 7a) and 24 penalty minutes. Laredo advanced all the way to the President's Cup Finals before losing to the eventual champion Colorado Eagles (Tyler Weiman and David Svagrovsky's team).
