
Erie Drops Two Straight with 7-2 Loss at Altoona

The SeaWolves dropped their second consecutive game, falling in the series opener to the Altoona Curve, 7-2, on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark. The loss drops the SeaWolves to two games under .500.
Altoona got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter L.J. Gagnier. Tony Sanchez led off and reached on a two-base error by the Erie shortstop Audy Ciriaco. Sanchez moved to third on a Kris Watts groundout and he scored on a Miles Durham sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves went ahead of the Curve in the top of the fourth inning against Curve starter Aaron Thompson. Bryan Pounds led off the inning and crushed a solo home run over the wall in left. It was his third long ball of the season, tying the game at 1-1. With one out, Michael Bertram slammed his first home run of the season over the right field wall giving the Howlers a 2-1 advantage.
The lead would hold until the sixth. Brock Holt led off the inning with a double and Starling Marte followed with a single. Quincy Latimore hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Holt, tying the game 2-2. On an errant throw from Jamie Johnson in center, Marte moved into scoring position. He would score on a Jordy Mercer base knock, giving Altoona a 3-2 lead. Gagnier then issued a one-out walk to Jerermy Farrell and a two-out walk to Watts, loading the bases for Durhm. Durham singled home Mercer and Farrell for a 5-2 lead. Brad Chalk capped off the night's scoring when he doubled home Watts and Durham for a 7-2 lead. Erie would get no closer.
The 'Wolves squandered scoring opportunities in the fifth through eighth innings, having runners in scoring position in each of the four innings with less than two outs. Erie loaded the bases in the eighth with no outs but reliever Michael Dubee retired the final six hitters of the game shutting the door.
Gagnier (3-2) took the loss for Erie allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
The SeaWolves and Curve play the second game of the four game series on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark.6:30 First Pitch. Righty Luke Putkonen (0-3, 7.77 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Jared Hughes (1-1, 4.35 ERA).
