Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - A six-run sixth inning that saw Altoona send 10 men to the plate catapulted the Curve to a, 7-2, win over the Erie SeaWolves in the first game of a four-game series at Blair County Ballpark on Thursday night. With the win, Altoona once again reaches the .500 mark at 16-16.
The Curve took a 1-0 lead early in the game when Miles Durham hit a sacrifice fly in the second to bring home Tony Sanchez. Erie then hit a pair of solo home runs in the fourth off Curve starter Aaron Thompson to take a 2-1 lead before Altoona blew it open in the sixth.
Brock Holt, who led off the game with a hit, doubled to begin the frame. Starling Marte follow Holt's double with a single of his own to place runners at first and third with no one down. Quincy Latimore drove in his 14th run of the season with a sac fly to center to tie up the game at two. On the play, Marte had advanced past second and was in danger of being doubled off at first, however, the throw from centerfielder Jamie Johnson was on target to first but no one was covering the bag.
Marte then re-advanced to second base and was driven in when the next batter, Jordy Mercer, singled him in to put the Curve in front for good. Durham singled in a pair later in the inning and Brad Chalk also got in on the hit parade with a double that brought home two. When it was all said and done, Altoona had scored six runs on five hits in the inning.
With the seven runs on Thursday night, Altoona has now scored 20 runs in its past two games. The Curve earned the 5-run victory on Thursday despite the fact that Erie had 15 hits and had two players, Michael Bertram and Justin Henry, both went 4-for-4 on the night.
Thompson lasted five innings and did not factor in the decision for Altoona. He allowed the two solo home runs while walking one and striking out a pair.
Back at .500, Altoona (16-16) and Erie (15-17) will play the second game of the four-game set at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark as RHP Jared Hughes (1-1, 4.35) will make the start for the Curve and he will be opposed by RHP Luke Putkonen (0-3, 7.77).
