Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
TRENTON, NJ - Binghamton relievers blew their ninth save chance of the season as Trenton overcame a 4-0 deficit with a seven-run seventh inning to win 7-4 at Waterfront Park Thursday night. The meltdown spoiled another strong start from Mark Cohoon, who allowed two runs on two hits over six-plus innings.
Binghamton (12-19) seemed to have the game well in hand with a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, Cohoon walked the first two hitters of the inning and was pulled from the game beginning the Thunder's rally. Fellow lefty Brandon Sage emerged from the bullpen for his second Double-A appearance and would fail to get an out. Corban Joseph singled to right to load the bases. Addison Maruszak followed with a two-run single to right, cutting the B-Mets lead in half. After Ray Kruml singled to load the bases again, Sage allowed a game-tying, two-run single to Austin Krum, which knocked him from the game.
Rhiner Cruz became the third different pitcher to throw for Binghamton in the seventh in search of the inning's first out. He proceeded to walk the first hitter he faced, Jose Pirela, to load the bases anew. Austin Romine made Cruz pay with a ringing two-run single to right, vaulting Trenton into the lead 6-4. Romine was the eighth straight hitter to reach in the frame. Bradley Suttle recorded the first out with a sacrifice fly to center, which plated Pirela for the Thunder's final run. The seven-run outburst is the biggest inning allowed by Binghamton this season.
Trenton (18-16), which was forced to use a spot-starter in place of the injured Craig Heyer, strung together the game with a band of relievers. Cory Arbiso started the game and gave a run in the first inning. Jordany Valdespin led the game off with a double to right-center. After he stole third, Eric Campbell brought him home with a groundout to short, which gave the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.
Arbiso exited after three innings of one-run work. Japanese southpaw Naoyo Okamoto replaced him and got roughed up. Josh Satin led off the fourth with a double to the gap in left-center. After Campbell flied out, Okamoto walked Brahiam Maldonado and hit Allan Dykstra with a pitch to load the bases. Carlos Guzman came next and drove a run home with a fielder's choice to short. Kai Gronauer put the finishing touch on the inning with a two-out double to left center which plated two more runs and increased the Binghamton lead to 4-0.
The B-Mets missed a golden scoring opportunity in the sixth when they loaded the bases with no outs on Okamoto thanks to a pair of errors and a single. The lefty struck out Jean Luc Blauqiere before giving way to Josh Schmidt, who stranded the bases loaded without allowing a run. This failed opportunity proved to be omen of things to come as the Thunder would come back to win.
Schmidt picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief. Tim Norton nailed down his second save for Trenton by striking out the side in the ninth.
Sage was charged with four runs on four hits and was saddled with the blown save and his first loss. Cohoon walked a season-high five, but carried a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings.
The B-Mets look to rebound in the second game of the four-game set Friday at 7:05 PM. RHP Brad Holt (1-1, 2.59) will start opposite LHP Kei Igawa (1-1, 2.95) of Trenton. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
