New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
(Reading, PA)-Travis d'Arnaud drilled a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to rally the Fisher Cats to an 8-5 win over Reading Thursday night and into first place in the Eastern League's Eastern Division.
The Fisher Cats were trailing 5-4 going to the top of the eighth inning in the opener of a five-game series at FirstEnergy Stadium. Anthony Gose and Mike McDade (2-for-4) hit consecutive singles to start the inning. Reading brought on reliever Phillippe Aumont to face Moises Sierra, who singled, scoring Gose to tie the game. d'Arnaud followed with his second home run of the season, a three-run shot, to put the Fisher Cats up 8-5.
New Hampshire played from behind most of the evening. Reading (20-13) scored three times in the bottom of the third inning. Tuffy Gosewisch singled and stole second. He scored on a single by Matt Miller to make it 1-0. After getting Matt Rizzotti to fly out, Cody Overbeck homered down the left field line to make it 3-0. It was Overbeck's tenth of the season, tops in the Eastern League.
The Fisher Cats (20-12) came back to tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Sierra walked and d'Arnaud singled. Sierra took third on a fly out by Ricardo Nanita, and then scored on a single by Mark Sobolewski to make it 3-1. John Tolisano (2-for-4) doubled in d'Arnaud to make it 3-2 and he advanced to third when the throw to the plate got away. Darin Mastroianni's sacrifice fly tied the game at 3-3.
The Phillies moved back in front in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stephen Susdorf singled and scored on a double by Carlos Rivero to make it 4-3. He moved to third on the throw to the plate in an attempt to cut down Susdorf. Derrick Mitchell's sacrifice fly scored Rivero to make it 5-3.
New Hampshire closed within one in the top of the seventh inning. Nanita reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Tolisano, and scored on a dropped third strike/passed ball with Mastroianni at bat to trim Reading's lead to 5-4.
Zach Stewart started for the Fisher Cats, but did not figure in the decision after giving up five runs on nine hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out one. Ron Uviedo picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-1. He worked two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Bobby Korecky picked up his first save of the season, working a scoreless ninth.
Jordan Ellis (1-1) took the loss for Reading.
The Fisher Cats continue the series in Reading with a doubleheader on Friday night beginning at 6:05pm. RHP Rey Gonzalez and RHP Yohan Pino will start for the Fisher Cats against Reading RHP Chris Kissock and RHP Tyson Brummett. Radio coverage begins at 5:45pm with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
The Fisher Cats return home on Tuesday, May 17 to play the Binghamton Mets at 7:05pm. It will be Teacher Appreciation Night. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
