'Cats Scratch Past R-Phils 8-5 Thursday

May 12, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) -- The Fisher Cats came to Reading last week and cooled off a hot R-Phils team. Tonight, they did much of the same.

Reading won four of six games on their most recent road trip, but on Thursday evening, the Fisher Cats were back in town fresh off a series sweep of the R-Phils in their last meeting

Travis d'Arnaud, a former Philadelphia Phillies farmhand, ripped a three-run home run in a four-run eighth inning, and New Hampshire beat the R-Phils 8-5 on Thursday evening in game one of their four-day, five-game series from FirstEnergy Stadium.

With the victory, the Fisher Cats bumped the R-Phils out of first place in the Eastern Division. The R-Phils (20-13) are now a half game back of the Fisher Cats (20-12) in the standings.

A native of Long Beach, CA, d'Arnaud, 22, went 2-3 with the home run and three RBIs on the evening. Acquired from Philadelphia as part of the Roy Halladay trade, d'Arnaud launched the three-run home run off of R-Phils reliever Phillippe Aumont. Aumont came in the game in relief of Jordan Ellis (1-1, 5.40), who allowed two runs over 0.1 innings and was saddled with the loss.

New Hampshire reliever Ron Uviedo (1-1, 3.31) tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn his first win of the season. Bobby Korecky allowed two hits in the ninth inning, but got the final three outs to earn his first save of the year. Fisher Cats starter Zach Stewart exited after six innings and did not factor in the decision. He allowed five runs on nine hits.

Offensively, Reading out-hit New Hampshire (13 hits for the R-Phils -- 11 for New Hampshire), and first baseman Cody Overbeck helped lead the way. Overbeck, who was the Eastern League Player of the Month for April, roped his league-leading 10th home run of the season in the third inning off Stewart. The two-run blast helped push Reading ahead by a score of 3-0. Overbeck also leads the Eastern League with 28 RBIs. Reading scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, courtesy of RBIs from Derrick Mitchell and Carlos Rivero -- but it was not enough.

Reading starter Ryan Edell allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings, but did not factor in the decision. He fanned three batters and walked one.

The R-Phils will look to get back in the win column on Friday, as they host New Hampshire in a doubleheader. Taking the ball for Reading in game one of the twin bill will be RHP Chris Kissock (1-3, 5.79). Kissock, a native of Trail, BC, pitched against the Fisher Cats on May 3, and allowed four runs on five hits over seven innings, but was saddled with the loss. Tyson Brummett (0-1, 1.89) will make the start for Reading in game two.

On the mound for New Hampshire in game one will be RHP Rey Gonzalez (3-1, 1.40). Gonzalez, a native of Villa Clara, Cuba, beat the R-Phils on May 2 in reading, when he tossed 8.2 shutout innings. Taking the ball in the second game on Friday for the 'Cats will be RHP Yohan Pino (0-2, 5.59). Pino, 27, dropped his last start of the season, which came on May 8 against Binghamton. He allowed just two runs on two hits over five innings in the loss.
