Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (18-16) used a seven-run seventh inning to come from behind to beat the Binghamton Mets (12-19) 7-4 Thursday night at Waterfront Park. Addison Maruszak, Austin Krum and Austin Romine each had two-run singles in the decisive frame to lead the Thunder to their 13th win in 18 tries at home this season. Thunder reliever Josh Schmidt threw two and two-thirds scoreless innings to notch his first win for the Thunder in 2011.

For the first six innings of the contest, the Thunder bats were stymied by Binghamton starter Mark Cohoon, but that would change in the bottom of the seventh. After two walks by Cohoon to begin the frame, the Trenton offense began its offensive onslaught. The Thunder recorded four straight singles to bring home four runs to tie the score. Then, after a Jose Pirela walk, Austin Romine singled to right, driving in two more runs to give the Thunder a 6-4 lead. When all was said and done, the Thunder scored seven runs on five hits and brought 12 men to the dish.

Before Trenton was able to storm from behind, Thunder relievers Naoya Okamoto and Josh Schmidt escaped a bases loaded, nobody out situation to halt the B-Mets' momentum in the top of the sixth. Okamoto struck out Jean Luc Blaquiere for the first out. Then, Schmidt came in and induced a Jose Coronado fielder's choice ground out to the plate and a strike out of Lorenzo Scott.

Trenton's series with Binghamton will continue Friday night at 7:05 PM for game two of the four-game set. The Thunder will send LHP Kei Igawa (1-1, 2.95) to the Waterfront Park mound. Igawa will oppose Binghamton's RHP Brad Holt (1-1, 2.59). The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.

The first 2,000 fans ages six and older to Friday's game will receive Phil Hughes Bobbleheads thanks to The Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Trenton. Call the Thunder Box Office at 609-394-3300 or log on to trentonthunder.com to reserve your seats today.
