Emotional Tilt Sees Walleye and Wings Stand Side-By-Side
February 21, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
TOLEDO, OH - The Kalamazoo Wings and Toledo Walleye began the game side-by-side at center ice in a moment of solidarity ahead of Sunday's contest, but the Wings were stonewalled by Walleye goalie Jeff Lerg, who posted a 24-save shutout, helping his team to a 2-0 win.
Despite even play through the first period, the Walleye struck for the game's first marker while on the power play. Cycling the puck around the zone, Scott Czarnowczan crashed the net, creating a rebound chance that found the stick of Shane Berschbach, who deposited his 20th tally of the season.
End-to-end action highlighted the play through the early stages of the second period, but the Walleye struck to make it a 2-0 game. Berschbach found Dominic Mingo streaking down the right side untouched, and he lifted the puck over a sprawling Clay Witt.
The two goals would be the only markers on the night, but the true victory came from the Toledo Walleye organization, who raised nearly $5,000 through a jersey auction to be donated to the families of the victims from last night's tragedy in Kalamazoo.
