Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Americans looked to bounce back from a Saturday night overtime loss to the Oilers, as they finished the weekend series in Tulsa on Sunday afternoon. The Americans fought back to force a shootout, but were turned away in all eight rounds, losing to the Oilers, 3-2.
There was some familiar blood in the lineup Sunday afternoon as Eric Roy rejoined the Americans on the blue line. In an uneventful first period, the only statistic to behold was the shots-on-goal advantage for Allen, leading 9-5.
The Oilers jumped on top first as the second period creeped to an end. Phil Brewer capitalized on a misplayed puck from the Allen defense. Tulsa would take that 1-0 into the third period.
Tulsa would extend their lead on a shorthanded goal from Dan DeSalvo, making the score 2-0 with just over half of a period left to play. Allen stayed in the thick of things on a goal from Vincent Arseneau. Allen would eventually tie things at 2-2 on a goal from Gary Steffes. The play was set up on a beautiful rush and centering pass from Tristan King.
An intensely thrilling overtime period would ensue, similar to last night. However, unlike last night, the score would not be settled and was forced to move on to a shootout.
The shootout featured a clinic from both goaltenders: Allen's Joel Rumpel and Tulsa's Jussi Olkinuora. It was Axel Blomqvist scoring in the 8th round of the shootout to give the Oilers the win. No other shooters were able to beat either goaltender, combining for 15 shooters getting turned away.
The Americans wrap up their seven game road trip on Friday, February 26th. Allen will play in Wichita that night before hosting the Thunder for the following Saturday and Sunday.
