Elmira Jackals News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - February 21, 2016 - Tyler Currier scored his 16th goal of the season, tying the team-lead held by Cason Hohmann and Allan McPherson, and Spiro Goulakos recorded his team-leading fifth power-play goal of the season but two special teams goals in the third period for Manchester pushed the Monarchs past Elmira 3-2.
The Monarchs opened the scoring at 2:54 with Maxim Kitsyn's team-leading 22nd goal of the season. Joe Diamond and Matt Fornataro assisted Kitsyn's opening marker. The Jackals quickly responded with the tying tally four minutes later. Yann Sauve coughed up the puck from behind his own net teeing up a blast from Tyler Currier for his 16th goal of the season. Currier's unassisted goal at 6:54 ties him for the team-lead held by Cason Hohmann and Allan McPherson.
Early in the second period Jacob MacDonald came across the blue line and lined up Danick Paquette with a legal check that incited the home team and led to a bout of fisticuffs with Troy Power. Following the hit and altercation, the testiness of the contest escalated and hit a boiling point when Paquette charged into Mark Bennett connecting up high leaving Bennett cut and in need of medical attention. Paquette was given a five minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct giving the Jackals a golden opportunity to take control of the contest. The pack didn't wait long to capitalize as Spiro Goulakos buried just 10 seconds into the man advantage. Cason Hohmann controlled the puck on the half-way and fed a pass down to Chris Langkow who tapped it backdoor for Goulakos who slipped down behind the defense for his seventh goal of the season at 10:37 of the second period.
The Jackals carried their one-goal lead into the third period receiving strong goaltending by C.J. Motte to preserve the lead. However, while on the power-play, the Jackals turned the puck over deep in their own end allowing Matt Leitner to steal it and send a pass into the slot to Michael Boivin for the game-tying goal at 12:59 of the final frame. Manchester pulled ahead with a power-play goal at 18:25 as Alex Guptill collected the loose puck poked away from Darik Angeli and fired it past Motte for his 14th goal of the season.
C.J. Motte turned aside 25 of 28 shots faced but was handed the loss. Doug Carr stopped 14 of 16 shots faced and earned the win.
