Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, OH) Jeff Lerg tied a Toledo ECHL record with his sixth career shutout as the Walleye picked up a 2-0 win over Kalamazoo Sunday at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 32-14-2-3 and 19-5-1-0 at home.
The two teams donned the jerseys that they wore on February 6 at Kalamazoo for ECHL Hockey Heritage weekend. The evening began with a moment of silence with the Walleye and Wings players standing together at center ice to remember the victims of Saturday's shootings in Kalamazoo. A raffle for Toledo's game worn jerseys brought in $8,400 with proceeds going to the victim's families.
The lone goal of the first period came from the Toledo Walleye power play as Shane Berschbach wristed a shot past Kalamazoo goaltender Clay Witt at 10:41 for his 20th goal of the year. The Walleye would take a 2-0 lead when Dajon Mingo (3rd) took a pass from Berschbach in front and found the top corner of the net at 4:27 of the second period.
The Walleye locked things down in the third period holding Kalamazoo to just four shots on goal. Toledo outshot the Wings 31-24 for the contest and finished one of two on the power play.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg secured his tenth victory of the season with stopping all 24 shots and his record stands at 21-6-1-2. The sixth career shutout in Toledo for Lerg tied a Toledo ECHL record for career shutouts held by David Goverde who played with the Toledo Storm from 1995-1997. Tonight's win was the ninth consecutive home win for the Walleye which continues the Toledo Walleye record.
Walleye Transaction: Forward Tyler Sikura returned after being loaned to the Portland Pirates of the AHL. The first year forward appeared in four games with Portland and did not collect a point. Sikura has 47 games played this season in Toledo with 10 goals and 19 assists.
