Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings went back to the well for the 2008 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. They chose forward Robin Soudek who joins fellow Czech Republic native Tomas Vincour as the Oil Kings 2 import players for the 2008 - 2009 season. The Oil Kings used the 12th overall selection to pick the 1991 born forward (July 31, 1991) they were hoping to acquire heading into the complicated draft. "We first learned of him talking to his agent at the NHL draft." said Oil Kings General Manager Bob Green. "The Newport Sports people brought his name up and we raised the name to Edmonton Oilers scout Frank Musil and then it started to go from there. Frank described him as a very good player. He's a solid skater and he's good in all areas of the game plus he's very adaptable for the North American style of hockey. He's a good sized kid at 17 and still has some room to get bigger and stronger."
The 5'9" and 152 pound right winger who happens to be a left handed shot raised a few eyebrows this past winter at the Under 17, Four Nations Cup in his home country of the Czech Republic. The 16 year old finished 8th in tournament scoring.
"He can chip in goal-wise but I think he's more of a set-up guy." described Green. "All we know is, he's a well rounded player and understands the value of taking care of your end of the rink as well as playing in the offensive zone."
Soudek played the last couple of seasons for HC Ceské Budejovice in the Czech Republic. In his 15 year old year, playing on the Under 18 team, he registered 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points in just 38 games. The Oil Kings were also able to get some more inside information on Robin.
"Frank (Musil) actually played against Robin's dad in the Czech pro league there and knows him quite well so we've got a pretty good relationship with the family." said Green. "With Frank's job with the Edmonton Oilers, he sees a lot of hockey players. He has a lot of passion for the players that he's watching over there and he cares about the Oil Kings which is a big asset too."
Soudek will attend the Oil Kings Training Camp set for August 25 - 27th at the Jubilee Recreation Centre in Fort Saskatchewan.
