San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda has been named the 2018 Men's Football Coach of the Year by Concacaf, which is the continental governing body for association football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Almeyda led Mexico's Chivas de Guadalajara to the Concacaf Champions League title in April of 2018, their first such championship since the tournament's inaugural competition in 1962. During the tournament, Almeyda led the Mexican side to consecutive victories over MLS clubs Seattle Sounders FC (quarterfinal), New York Red Bulls (semifinal) and Toronto FC (final).
Almeyda is just the second head coach of a club team to win the award over the past six seasons, with the honor going to a national team manager in 2013 (Klinsmann; USA), 2014 (Pinto; Costa Rica), 2015 (Gomez; Panama), and 2016 (Ramirez; Costa Rica). Greg Vanney of Toronto FC won the award in 2017.
The Earthquakes hired Almeyda on Oct. 8, 2018 and will introduce him to the local fanbase during the Bienvenido Matias event on Sunday, Jan. 20.
