Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (57-54) fell behind 4-0 in the first four innings, and the Memphis Redbirds (58-53) held off their comeback attempt in a 6-4 loss. The loss coupled with an Iowa win at New Orleans drops Omaha to 1.5 games back in the American Conference North Division.
Omaha starter Buddy Baumann came in to the game having allowed only two earned runs in 15.0 innings across four starts in 2014, but gave up four runs in his four innings of work. He allowed two doubles to start the game that both came around to score, and his day was punctuated by allowing his first homer of the season in a solo shot to Audry Perez in the fourth. Baumann had the most innings in all of Triple-A Baseball without a homer allowed at 62.2 innings before the blast.
A solo homer by Carlos Peguero got the Omaha scoring started in the bottom of the fourth, his first homer this season against a left-handed pitcher and 15th of the season (third most for the Chasers). After the Redbirds responded with two runs to push the lead back to four runs, Whit Merrifield drove in two runs with two outs in the sixth. Omaha got a runner on in each of the final three innings, but could not cash in as they were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position on the night.
Matt Fields collected his league-leading 49th extra-base hit of the season with a double, which was his team-leading 26th this year and a new career high for two-baggers in a season for the slugger. Fields' 49 extra-base hits also ties a career high, which he set last year with Northwest Arkansas. With the loss, Omaha and Memphis have now split the last 62 games against each other dating back to the start of the 2011 season at 31-31.
Omaha will look to split the series and the season series with the Redbirds as RHP Liam Hendriks (8-1, 2.33 ERA with Triple-A Buffalo in 2014) makes his Storm Chasers debut. He will face off with Memphis LHP Tim Cooney (10-5, 3.60 ERA), with first pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
