El Paso Chihuahuas News Release
EL PASO, Texas - July 31, 2014 - A new four legged member has joined the El Paso Chihuahuas front office staff.
A rescue from the Humane Society of El Paso, a NO-Kill shelter, has found a new home at Southwest University Park; the female pup will make her debut at the Chihuahuas Bark at the Park game on August 3rd when the team takes on the Reno Aces (New York Mets). First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
"We are excited to partner with the Humane Society of El Paso for the new addition to the Chihuahuas," said Brad Taylor, General Manager. "She will be an ambassador for responsible pet ownership and a reminder that these animals can add happiness to other families."
The Chihuahuas teamed up with the Humane Society of El Paso to seek a friend for the current mascot, Chico. After months of searching, Kandolite Flores, Associate Director for the Humane Society, found the Chihuahua, a one-year-old brown dog, resembling the team's brand, at Animal Services.
Like thousands of El Paso pets, the Chihuahua was wondering the streets and found without any I.D or a microchip. She was turned into Animal Services in hopes of finding her owner or owners but was never reclaimed. The Chihuahua was moved into the V.I.P (Virtually Irresistible Pets) section at the city shelter which allows some animals more time to be adopted prior to being euthanized. Five days after entering the shelter she was spotted by Flores.
"As soon as I saw her I knew she was the perfect match for the Chihuahuas," Flores said. "She was a little nervous, but let loose and showed us her personality. We know she is going to do great in her new home and be a PAW-esome ambassador for her breed and other rescues."
Flores contacted the Chihuahuas, who adopted the dog on Tuesday after she was transferred to the Humane Society. The pup underwent routine health checks, was micro chipped, vaccinated and spayed. The Chihuahua was put into foster care before joining the team to recover from being malnourished.
"She'll serve as a reminder to our community about the thousands of animals left behind every year," said Flores. "The Humane Society is happy to be working with the Chihuahuas and thankful for their help with promoting responsible pet parenting and advocating for pets in our community."
With the rescue and adoption, the Chihuahuas are asking fans to help name her! The Chihuahuas, in conjunction with the Humane Society of El Paso, are asking fans to donate $1 to vote on a name for Chico's new best friend. Ruby, Lola, Reina, Estrella and Rosa are the choices from which fans can pick. All proceeds will go towards the Humane Society. Fans can vote at www.hselpaso.org/vote. The winner will be announced at the dog's introduction on August 3rd.
The Chihuahuas will also wear jerseys featuring a Chihuahuas head, that have already received national attention, resembling the brand that will be auctioned off during the game, with all proceeds going towards the Humane Society of El Paso.
Fans can purchase tickets at EPChihuahuas.com or in person at the Durango or Santa Fe Box Offices. The box office opens at 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday.
