Iowa Keeps Zephyrs in Funk
July 31, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The Iowa Cubs hit three more home runs and Dan Straily pitched six scoreless innings to shut out the New Orleans Zephyrs, 4-0 on Thursday night.
New Orleans has scored just one run in dropping each of the last three contests to Iowa. The Zephyrs were shutout for a league-leading 11th time this season, and have been blanked in four of the last 10 meetings with the Cubs.
The I-Cubs threatened in each of the first three innings, stranding seven baserunners against Z's starter Elih Villanueva before grabbing the lead in the fifth.
Logan Watkins ripped a single off the glove of a leaping Josh Rodriguez at second base, and Javy Baez followed by driving an off-speed offering over the the left field fence for his 21st home run of the season. It was Baez's league-leading 10th homer in July, and he has 32 RBI for the month, second-most in the PCL.
After the Zephyrs got back-to-back singles from Kyle Jensen and Rob Brantly in the second, Iowa starter Dan Straily retired 12 of the next 13 batters until Zack Cox doubled with one out in the sixth. Justin Bour then ripped a two-out grounder past Mike Olt at first, but the Cubs had placed Baez in shallow right field, and was able to throw out Bour to end the threat.
The Cubs continued their assault on the outer reaches of Zephyr Field in the seventh. Kris Bryant led off by sneaking a home run over the right field wall and inside the foul pole, giving him 35 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A this season, second-most in the minors.
One batter later, Olt laced a homer to left, his first since being optioned from Chicago last week, to extend Iowa's lead to 4-0.
Straily (5-6) was removed after six shutout innings, during which he struck out five and walked one to pick up his first win in five starts since joining the Cubs in the Jeff Samardzija trade.
Arodys Vizcaino chipped in two scoreless frames, and Marcus Hatley needed just seven pitches in the ninth inning to finish off the shutout.
Villanueva (9-7) was charged with two runs and six hits in five innings to take the loss. He struck out four and issued a season-high five walks.
New Orleans and Iowa conclude the five-game series on Friday at 7 p.m.
