Sky Sox, Sounds Split Doubleheader; Lyles Picks up Win in Rehab

July 31, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (46-65) were just two innings away from back-to-back shutouts during Thursday's doubleheader against the Nashville Sounds (60-52), but a late RBI-double from Sean Halton and a costly throwing error gave the Sounds a 5-4 win in game two.

The Sky Sox shutout Nashville 6-0 in game one behind four and two-thirds of scoreless ball from rehabbing RHP Jordan Lyles (1-0) to pick up their 10th shutout of the season, and their seventh home shutout - the most home shutouts in franchise history.

Lyles continued yesterday's suspended game and allowed just three hits, while striking out four with two walks.

The Sox came into today with a 2-0 lead after Ryan Wheeler hit a solo-blast in the second inning and Jackson Williams scored on a wild pitch before the game was suspended because rain. RHP Brett Tomko, who started the game, went just two innings before having to leave the game after breaking his left hand when he was hit by a pitch.

In the fourth inning on Thursday, the Sky Sox scored a run off Johnnie Lowe when Rafael Ynoa drove in a run on his single to right. It was one of five hits Ynoa collected in both games (5-for-7) with a double. He was the only player on either team to collect more than two hits in both games combined.

Colorado Springs tacked on three more (two earned) off LHP Brent Leach in the sixth inning thanks to RBIs from Kyle Parker, Matt McBride and Angelys Nina to give the Sox some insurance.

In game two, the teams were knotted up 0-0 before the Sky Sox busted out three runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-run triple by Jason Pridie. Pridie scored on the next pitch off a wild pitch from Dustin Molleken (3-2). The Sounds scored the three runs right back in the sixth with their own RBI triple from Jason Rogers followed by a two-run blast to right field from Matt Clark.

The Sky Sox retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth when 2B Drew Garcia sneaked a ground ball up the middle to take a 4-3 lead, but it wasn't enough.

In the seventh, Sean Halton smacked a RBI double to tie the game, and Pete Orr plated Halton when he hit a weak ground ball in front of C Dustin Garneau, but Garneau's throw to first sailed and allowed the run to score.

RHP Dan Houston tossed four strong innings in his third start of the year allowing four hits, while striking out three and walking one. RHP Chris Martin (1-2) blew his first save of the year and picked up the loss. RHP Rob Wooten saved the game for Nashville picking up his seventh save of 2014.

The Sky Sox and Sounds will play another doubleheader on Friday. The first game will begin at 4:30 p.m. (MT). RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-2, 3.46 ERA) will start game one for the Sox, while RHP Leuris Gomez (1-1, 5.52) will start game two. For the Sounds, RHP Taylor Jungmann (5-5, 5.13 ERA) will toe the rubber for game one, while RHP Kyle Heckathorn (3-2, 6.18) will pitch game two.
