March 6, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
(Loveland, CO) - The Colorado Eagles picked up a point in the standings, but fell in a shootout to the Fort Wayne Komets 4-3 on Sunday. Eagles forward Johnny Lazo scored two goals in the loss, as the Eagles have not suffered a regulation defeat over the last seven consecutive contests.
Fort Wayne got on the board first scoring 6:41 into the first period when forward Jamie Schaafsma scored from the slot to give the Komets a 1-0 lead early in the game.
Later in the first, defenseman Will Weber gave the Komets a 2-0 lead, scoring on a shorthanded breakaway at the 10:13 mark of the opening period.
Early in the second period Fort Wayne forward Trevor Cheek took a centering pass from Shawn Szydlowski and riffled a shot past Eagles goaltender Kris Lazaruk. The goal gave the Komets a 3-0 advantage at the 1:13 mark of the period.
The Eagles scored a pair of quick goals to close out the second. Forward Jesse Mychan set up on the left side of the crease and placed the puck past Komets goaltender Spencer Martin, cutting the Fort Wayne lead to two at the 16:07 mark.
Just 51 seconds later, Lazo scored his 15th goal of the season from the top of the crease. Lazo's goal cut the Fort Wayne lead to one at 3-2 with 3:02 left in the middle frame.
Lazo scored his second goal of the night early in the third period, slamming home a wrister to tie the game at 3-3 just 1:24 into the final frame.
At the end of regulation the Eagles and Komets were tied 3-3. Neither team would find the back of the net in sudden-death overtime, forcing Colorado and Fort Wayne to a shootout, the Eagles first of the season.
Eagles forward Trent Daavettila would be the only Colorado shooter to light the lamp, as Jordon Southorn and Szydlowski each converted for Fort Wayne in the shootout to give the Komets the 4-3 win.
The Eagles head out on the road next week facing off against the Utah Grizzlies in Salt Lake City on Friday, March 11th. Puck Drop is at 7:05 MST.
