March 6, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
BRAMPTON, ON - For the second consecutive weekend, the Elmira Jackals have traveled on the road and swept their opponent. With their 3-2 win today, the Jackals have improved their dominating record against Brampton to 5-1-0 this season with five more meetings in their final 13 regular season games. Mark Bennett led the offense today with a goal and an assist while Zach Cohen and Tyler Currier also recorded goals. Shane Owen stopped 16 of 18 shots faced to earn his second win with the Jackals in as many tries.
Much like Friday's contest, the Jackals scored the opening goal and grabbed the lead in the first twenty minutes. Mark Bennett started a fast rush from the neutral zone receiving a give-and-go feed down the right wing side and powered to the net front slipped the puck past Kenny Reiter on his backhand. Matt Garbowsky and Spiro Goulakos added the assists on Bennett's eighth goal of the season. The Jackals outshot the Beast 9-2 in the first period.
Elmira quickly added to its lead in the opening 1:25 of the second frame with Zach Cohen's 10th goal of the season and second as a member of the Jackals. The goal was the result of a hard forecheck led by Matt Garbowsky and Mark Bennett with Cohen posted in the slot waiting for Garbowsky's feed from behind the net for the stinging shot. The Beast bit back at 3:39 of the period as Colin Murray scored a one-time feed in the slot to cut the Jackals' lead back to one. Brampton evened the score at 7:01 with Steve Mele's first goal of the season setting up a twenty minute battle for the win in the third period.
The tie-breaking goal came at 11:20 of the third period as Tyler Currier received a long stretch pass out of the Jackals end at the Brampton blue line and walked in to take a shot that was partially deflected due to a stick-check on Currier's release. The speed and direction of the puck was slightly altered creating a changeup on target that squeezed under Reiter's pad and trickled over the goal line. Ian Young and Kyle Bushee earned the assists on Currier's 17th goal of the season.
Shane Owen stopped 16 of 18 shots faced to earn his 15th win of the season and his second with the Jackals in as many tries. Kenny Reiter allowed three goals on 32 shots faced and was handed the loss.
