RIO RANCHO, N.M.- The Colorado Eagles handily defeated the New Mexico Scorpions 8-3 Friday night at the Santa Ana Star for their 46th victory of the season. Colorado is now just one point away from winning their third straight Governors' Cup. Seven different players had goals for Colorado including Ryan Tobler's two goals. The Eagles finished the season 7-0 against New Mexico and they are now 22-2-4 against the Scorpions all-time. Marco Emond stopped 43 of 46 shots in his 28th win of the season. The Eagles have just one more game in the regular season when they travel to Arizona to take on the Sundogs Saturday night at the Tim's Toyota Center.
Colorado scored early and often in the first period. The CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman Brad Williamson scored his 10th goal of the season at the 2:50 mark on assists from Riley Nelson and Seth Leonard. At the 8:50 mark, Brent Hughes was left open in the high slot, he skated in and beat Scorpions' goaltender David Cacciola glove side to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Colorado continued to pressure the Scorpions and Aaron Schneekloth slipped in and took a feed from Hughes to bury his 10th goal of the season. Finally, at the 18:37 mark of the period, Riley Nelson scored his 41st goal of the season, he is still tied for the league-lead in goals. After one period, the Eagles led 4-0.
Ryan Tobler extended the Eagles lead to 5-0 on an unassisted goal at the 8:10 mark of the second period. Finally, at the 15:05 mark of the period Andrew Smale scored for the Scorpions to make the score 5-1. It was a power play goal on assists from Mike Falk and Christopher Robertson. After two periods, the Eagles held a 5-1 lead.
Colorado added three more goals in the third period. Ed McGrane scored a power play goal at the 5:30 mark on assists from Aaron Schneekloth and Ryan Tobler. The assist for Tobler marked the 300th in his career. Sean Robertson scored his 13th goal of the season just two minutes later, and finally Ryan Tobler scored at the 14:47 mark making the score 8-1. Ryan McLeod scored for New Mexico with 47 seconds remaining, and with just 12 seconds remaining, Kevin Harvey scored for the Scorpions. Final Score: Eagles 8 - Scorpions 3.
