New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-It was a tough night at the office for the beloved Scorpions as they fell 8-3 to Colorado. The loss kept the Scorpions magic number at three to clinch the Southwest Division.
Colorado started the game with their foot on the gas pedal and never backed off. The Eagles used goals from Brad Williamson, Brent Hughes, Aaron Schneekloth, and Riley Nelson in the first period to stun the Santa Ana Star Center crowd and chasing goalie David Cacciola to the bench.
Ryan Tobler opened the second period with his first of two goals on the night extending the lead to 5-0. Andrews Smale stuffed home a power play goal at 15:05 of the middle period to get the Scorpions on the scoreboard.
Colorado pulled away again in the third period with Ed McGrane, Sean Robertson and Tobler lighting the lamp. The Scorpions made the box score look better with two late-game goals. Ryan McLeod picked up his 24th goal of the year. With less than 20-seonds to go in the contest Kevin Harvey registered his fifth goal of the year.
The good news for the Scorpions is they still control their own destiny. With a weekend sweep of Rocky Mountain, the Scorpions will clinch their first CHL division title and third division title in franchise history.
Saturday night the Scorpions play their final home game of the regular season with a 7:05 p.m. battle against the Rocky Mountain Rage. Buy your Red Out T-Shirt for only $15 and get a free ticket to the game. In addition, six lucky fans attending the game on March 24 will have a chance to win $10,000 in the Santa Ana Star Casino Cash Drop.
