Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs hosted the Rocky Mountain Rage on Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley in the first-ever Sundogs âWhite Out'. Ten Sundogs would contribute in the game's scoring and five would garner multiple-point outings. Sundogs forward Cory Stillman would grab his second hat trick of the season en route to an 8-4 win.
In the opening period of Friday night's contest the Sundogs would convincingly outplay the Rocky Mountain Rage but it would be the visiting club that would take an early lead. Penalties would prove to be the back-breaker for the Sundogs early on as both Rage goals would come with the man advantage. Mark Wires would collect the first power play goal from Dan Vandermeer and Kyle Kos midway through the first. Just 1:50 later Rocky Mountain would push their lead to two as Nathan Rosychuk would score on passes from Adam Loncan and Wires. The Sundogs would get on the board with less than a minute to play in the first as defenseman Dan Laperriere would pick up a pass from Chris Greene and fire the puck past Rage netminder David Guerrera. The shorthanded goal, Arizona's 10th of the season, would come at the 19:05 mark.
Outplaying the Rage for the second straight period, the Sundogs would pull even as Laperriere would grab his second goal of the game, this time on the power play. He would take a pass from Dmitri Leonov and Cory Stillman from behind the net leaving Guerrera out of position. The equalizer would come at 7:39 of the middle frame. With just over nine minutes to play in the second Arizona would see its second power play goal and first lead of the game as Karl Sellan would tally his 21st of the season. The rookie forward would push a Chris Bartolone rebound across the goal line, making the score 3-2 in favor of Arizona. The Sundogs would notch its biggest lead of the game as Brent Kelly would keep pace in the CHL goal scoring race grabbing his 41st of the year from Leonov and Bartolone. The goal would come at the 14:01 mark and would be Arizona's third power play goal of the evening. Scoring his club's fourth power play goal of the period, Cory Stillman would get involved in the scoring fray collecting his 30th marker on the year with 2:34 remaining in the second. Kelly and Sellan would be credited with assists on the play.
The Sundogs would pick up where they left off in the second period as Stillman would pick up his second power play goal of the game 6:30 into the final period. Stillman would take a pass from Bartolone in his own zone and skate through the Rage defense to beat Guerrera near post. At the 10:48 mark Stillman would grab his third goal of the game and second hat trick of the season on passes from Max Gordichuk and Kelly. The 6'2" forward would skate in alone and out-maneuver the Rocky Mountain netminder to give his club a 7-2 lead on the Sundogs' first even-strength goal of the contest. With 8:32 remaining in the third the Rage would score their first goal since the 11:57 mark of the first period. John DiPace would find the back of the net past Sundogs netminder Kris Mayotte at 11:28 of the third from Dominic Noel and Dorian Anneck. With 3:31 remaining in the third Ladislav Kouba would glove a puck out of the air and under pressure skate in to grab his fourth goal as a Sundog and 16th of the season. The goal would be the second shorthanded goal of the night for Arizona. Stillman would cap off a six point night with an assist. Jon Landry would also tally an assist on the shorthanded play. One minute later Rocky Mountain would grab its fourth goal of the game as Trevor Weisgerber would find the back of the net with the help of Rosychuk and Loncan to close out the night's scoring.
Kris Mayotte would get the start in net for Arizona, stopping 22 of 26 shots for the win while David Guerrera would appear in goal for Rocky Mountain deflecting 37 of 45 shots. Arizona would outshoot the Rage 45-26 in the 8-4 win. The Sundogs would score five straight power play goals in the second and third periods, finishing 5-for-13 with the man advantage while the Rage would convert on two early power play chances to finish 2-of-7.
With the win the Sundogs move back into a tie for second place with the Amarillo Gorillas, just two points back of the division leading New Mexico Scorpions with one game to play.
