Dubnyk, Spurgeon Recalled To Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League, has announced rookie goaltender Devan Dubnyk and center Tyler Spurgeon have been recalled to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.

Dubnyk, 20, is seventh in the ECHL with a 2.57 goals-against-average and has compiled a 13-5-6 record with a .920 save percentage and one shutout. The 2004 NHL Entry Draft first-round pick (14th overall) of the Oilers stopped 17 shots in the second period at the 2007 Rbk Hockey ECHL All-Star Game, and was ranked #2 among North American Goaltenders by the NHL Central Scouting Service prior to the 2004 draft.

The Calgary, Alberta native appeared in two NHL preseason games with Edmonton this year, posting a 1-1-0 record and a .965 save percentage, stopping 56 of 58 shots. Dubnyk shutout the Phoenix Coyotes in his preseason debut, making 27 saves in a 5-0 Oilers win on September 17.

Spurgeon, 20, was selected in the eighth round (242nd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Oilers and ranks fourth on the Thunder in scoring with 29 points (13g-16a) in 39 games. The Edmonton, Alberta native previously spent his five-year (2001-06) junior hockey career with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League, scoring 124 points (43g-81a) in 212 career junior games, along with 36 points (17g-19a) in 72 career playoff games which included a Memorial Cup Championship in 2003-04.

Currently, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Kyle Brodziak is out with an injury.

The Thunder returns home to Stockton Arena on Friday, February 2, with a 7:30 p.m. faceoff against the Bakersfield Condors. The game can be heard live on the internet (free-of-charge) and is available for viewing for a $6 "pay-per-view" charge at www.stocktonthunder.com (courtesy of B2 Networks).
