Drive Bats Silenced by RiverDogs in 3-1 Loss
May 16, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - In the renewal of the Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx, the Charleston RiverDogs pitching was the story, as they held the Greenville Drive to three hits in a 3-1 victory on Monday night at Fluor Field.
Charleston (23-13) starter Daris Vargas held the Drive (18-18) hitless through the first four innings, and scoreless through five and two-third, to improve to 3-0 on the season. He allowed two hits and three walks in total with eight strikeouts.
Angel Aguilar provided the entirety of the RiverDogs offense on Monday, as he belted a two-run homer over the Green Monster off Jose Almonte (0-1) in the second to make the score 2-0, and he added an RBI single in the sixth against Austin Glorius.
Despite taking the loss, Almonte was solid in his Drive debut, as he allowed just the two runs over five innings with five hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
The Drive finally got on the board in the ninth, as Josh Ockimey drew a leadoff walk and later scored thanks to two RiverDogs errors, but Anyelo Gomez finished things off to record his first save.
Luis Alejandro Basabe, Joseph Monge and Austin Rei collected the Drive hits on the night, and Basabe added a pair of stolen bases as well.
Game two of the three-game series begins at 7:05 on Tuesday night at Fluor Field. The Drive will send right-hander Roniel Raudes (4-1, 3.33) to the mound, and the RiverDogs starter will be announced tomorrow.
