Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Kannapolis starting pitcher Chris Comito matched his season-high with five innings of work, but Greensboro took advantage of an Intimidators error en route to a Grasshoppers win, 3-2, on Monday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. The Intimidators (16-21) dropped their fourth straight game despite out-hitting the Grasshoppers, 7-4, on the night.
Commit (0-3) suffered a hard-luck loss, allowing a pair of unearned runs on three hits over 5.0 innings while striking out two and walking one. Jaider Rocha worked 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing a run on no hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Ryan Riga retired seven of the eight batters he faced over 2 and 1/3 scoreless relief innings.
Chuck Weaver (2-4) earned the win with 4.0 relief innings on the mound for Greensboro. He allowed a run on four hits while striking out three before turning the ball over to C.J. Robinson, who struck out the side in a perfect ninth for the save (6).
Kannapolis scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning when Cody Daily's sacrifice fly scored Tyler Sullivan.
The Grasshoppers jumped ahead in the top of the third on Isael Soto's two-run triple with two outs in the frame, giving Greensboro a 2-1 lead. Kannapolis aided the Grasshoppers efforts by giving them an extra out, and Korey Dunbar reached base on a Johan Cruz fielding error to open the inning.
Following three scoreless frames, the Hoppers added a run in the seventh when Aaron Blanton walked and moved from first to third on a wild pitch. Dunbar drove him home with a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 advantage. Kannapolis cut into the Greensboro lead, 3-2, in the home half of the seventh when Zach Fish scored on a Cruz groundout.
Greensboro starting pitcher Jordan Holloway took no decision, working 4.0 innings and allowing a run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.
The Intimidators and Grasshoppers continue this 3-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at RHP Zach Thompson (3-2, 3.31 ERA) take the mound for Kannapolis against Greensboro's RHP Cody Potent (1-4, 3.98 ERA).
