Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Neftali Soto collected three hits and drove in three runs and the Dayton Dragons held off a comeback bid by the Beloit Snappers to earn a 5-4 victory on Monday night. It was the Dragons seventh consecutive win and improved their record to 14-11 in the second half.

Dayton built a 5-1 lead over the first four innings and seemed to have the game in control before Beloit scored three runs in the seventh, taking advantage of the Dragons worst defensive inning of the year. The Dragons committed four errors in the inning before relief pitcher Henry Arias got the final out with the tying run at third.

Arias pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Zach Stewart, the Reds third round draft pick last month out of Texas Tech, came on to pitch the ninth. Stewart gave up a one-out infield single and issued a two-out walk to push the tying run to second, but he got Rene Leveret on a ground ball to the side of the mound to end the game as Stewart earned his second professional save.

Beloit took the lead in the second inning when Ozzie Lewis doubled and scored on a two-base hit by Andrew Schmiesing to make it 1-0.

The Dragons answered in the bottom of the inning when Logan Parker doubled to right with one out and scored on Angel Cabrera's two-out single to center to tie the score.

Dayton jumped ahead for good in the third when Zack Cozart led off with a double to left and scored on Soto's single to center to make it 2-1.

In the fourth, Dayton's Devin Mesoraco doubled to left to start the inning and went to third on Parker's single to left. One batter later, Angel Cabrera singled to left to bring in Mesoraco and make it 3-1, and with two outs, Soto delivered his third hit of the game, a single to left to bring in both Parker and Cabrera to make it 5-1.

Dragons starting pitcher Matt Klinker (5-4) won his second straight start, going six innings and allowing six hits and one run with one walk and three strikeouts. Klinker has allowed a total of three runs over his last three starts.

Soto played in eight of the nine games on the homestand after being called up from Billings and batted .400 with eight runs batted in.

Major leaguer Jolbert Cabrera completed an injury rehabilitation assignment with the Dragons. In six games with the club, he batted .364.

The Dragons finished the homestand with a record of 7-2. They are now 19-9 against Western Division teams this season and play the next 18 games vs. the West.

The Dragons do not play on Tuesday. They begin a six game road trip at Cedar Rapids on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. Kyle Lotzkar (2-3, 3.81) will start for Dayton.
