July 14, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits scored seven times through the first four innings as they beat the Clinton LumberKings 7-2 at Alliant Energy Field on Monday morning.

Quad Cities' (13-12, 46-43) starting pitcher, Richard Castillo, kept the LumberKings offense quiet by allowing just two runs through 5.2 innings pitched. Clinton's (12-13, 53-39) starter Levi Romero was ruffed up in his debut start, allowing the River Bandits to score six times through three innings.

The ballgame started off with a bang when Ross Oeder blasted the third pitch of the game over the left field wall to put the River Bandits up 1-0 after the first inning of play. The LumberKings lead-off batter, Engel Beltre, returned the favor though when he lifted the a Richard Castillo offering over the wall in left field, to tie the game at 1-1 after one inning.

Quad Cities answered back in the bottom of the second inning by taking advantage of four walks in the inning. With one out, Francisco Rivera worked a full-count walk and advanced to second on a D'Marcus Ingram bloop single into right field. After Roberto Espinoza walked to load the bases, Oliver Marmol took four straight pitches to work an RBI free pass to give the River Bandits a 2-1 lead. One out later, Oeder took a four-pitch walk to push in another run, giving him two RBI on the day and Quad Cities a 3-1 advantage at the end of two innings.

The River Bandits continued to add on to their lead in the third inning. Carlos Pupo doubled to left field and Nick Peoples followed with a walk to put runners on first and second base. Two outs later, Espinoza drove a double into left field to score Pupo and Peoples, extending the score to 5-1. Marmol then smacked a double of his own into left field that allowed Espinoza to score another run, giving the River Bandits a 6-1 lead after just three innings of play.

Quad Cities added one more run in the fourth inning to give Castillo (4-1) more than enough run support to take home the victory. Castillo pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out six LumberKings. The win was Castillo's third in a row as he continues to pitch well for Quad Cities since joining the team on June 19 from Palm Beach.

Levi Romero (0-1), the starter for Clinton, was hit with the loss in his debut start for the LumberKings. The River Bandits wasted no time in welcoming Romero to the league, as they touched him up for six runs in three innings pitched. Command seemed to be an issue for Romero, as he walked five batters and struck out three.

Quad Cities has Tuesday off, but will be back in action on Wednesday against the Burlington Bees. Nick Additon (7-3) will oppose Alex Caldera (7-6) to begin the three-game series at Modern Woodmen Park.
