West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - Magglio Ordonez had the first of 14 Whitecaps hits in a 10-2 win over Peoria. The sellout crowd of 10,592 was the largest at Fifth Third Ballpark since a team record 12,171 turned out on July 30, 2005. The victory snapped a four game losing streak for West Michigan. It was the first time since July 6 that the ‘Caps tallied ten hits and it was the first time since June 7 (a 10-1 win at Great Lakes in game two of a double header) that West Michigan has tallied double digit runs. With two out in the first inning, Ordonez singled to start a two run rally. The reigning American League batting champion was sent by the Detroit Tigers to the Whitecaps on a rehab assignment. Alex Avila followed the Ordonez hit with a single before Joe Tucker put the Whitecaps on the scoreboard with a two run double.

In the second inning, Ordonez grounded to the left side of the infield with two out and the bases loaded. The ball went off the glove of Chiefs third baseman Jovan Rosa for an error that allowed Cory Middleton to score for a 3-0 West Michigan lead.

Ordonez popped to left and grounded to second in his other two plate appearances to finish 1-for-4 with a run scored. He batted third in the lineup as the designated hitter. With a five run lead in the seventh inning, the Whitecaps scored four times to put the game away. Ronnie Bourquin had an RBI sacrifice fly followed by back-to-back home runs from Jordan Newton and Middleton.

The blasts gave West Michigan a 9-1 advantage. It was the first time the ‘Caps had hit consecutive home runs since Chris Carlson and Casper Wells on May 9 at Lansing. Bourquin and Middleton each had three hits and two RBI. Nathan Samson doubled twice and scored both of the Peoria runs, which came in the third and eighth innings. Jon Kibler allowed one run on five hits over seven innings to get the win. The bottom five hitters in the lineup had all nine of the Whitecaps RBI.
