GENEVA, IL - Greg Dowling crushed a controversial three-run homer down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday night to give the Kane County Cougars a 4-3 lead and eventual 4-3 win over the Burlington Bees in front of 9,659 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The comeback took starter Jason Fernandez off the hook for a loss after the right-hander's third straight quality start. The Cougars have won nine of their last 14 games.

Fernandez's only problematic inning was the second when he walked two batters and gave up a three-run homer to Matt Morizio for a 3-0 deficit. Fernandez gave up a two-out single later in that inning but then retired the final 15 batters he faced. He worked 6 2/3 innings, scattered four hits, walked two and struck out nine, with all nine strikeouts coming within a 12-batter span.

The Cougars got on the board against Blake Wood in the bottom of the second when Alex Valdez cracked a two-out run-scoring single to bring home Dowling, who had doubled.

That 3-1 score remained until the last of the eighth when Dowling, with Gustavo Rosendo and Sean Doolittle on base, pulled a shot down the line off Chris Hayes (3-4) that was ruled a home run, leading to Burlington manager Jim Gabella's ejection and the crowd's frenzy. It was Dowling's ninth homer of the season and gives him 60 RBIs. Nick Walters (3-0) became the winner after a scoreless eighth, and Andrew Carignan saved his third game in as many chances with a flawless ninth.
