Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- The Cedar Rapids Kernels upended the Lansing Lugnuts 5-1 on a hot Wednesday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park before 2,353 fans on Summer Fun Day.

The Kernels trailed 1-0 in the fourth before getting three straight singles from Abel Nieves, Hank Conger, and Mark Trumbo to tie the game. Trumbo's knock to right field scored Nieves from second base.

Cedar Rapids took the lead in the next inning when Nieves was able to line a single into right field that plated Wilberto Ortiz to make it 2-1.

The run support would be enough for a sharp Cedar Rapids pitching staff, as they allowed just one hit over the final four innings.

Tommy Mendoza (1-3) got the win for the Kernels by tossing five innings and allowing one unearned run on five hits.

Blake Holler and Able Nieves combined to throw the final four innings, fanning seven in the process.

The Kernels added three more runs late in the game to put it away. Two runs crossed the plate in the eighth when Matt Sweeney singled to right to bring home Nieves. Travis Snider's throwing error on the play also allowed Trumbo to score to make it 4-1.

Nieves struck again in the ninth with an infield RBI single to cap the scoring. He finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Lansing's only run of the game in the second inning when Paul Franko lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.

Ray Gonzalez (5-5) suffered the loss for the Lugnuts, as he surrendered two runs on seven hits over five innings.

Lansing (57-50, 22-16) and Cedar Rapids (56-51, 18-20) will wrap their four game series up on Thursday night at Oldsmobile Park. Julio Pinto (1-4, 5.43) will take the mound for Lansing. He will be opposed by the Kernels' David Herndon (8-7, 4.38).

It will be a Molson Thirsty Thursday, with beer and soda on-sale for just $2. The night will also be a part of the WILX Summer Entertainment Series, which will present 80's Night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
