Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

DAYTON, OH -- Dayton Dragon hitters banged four home runs and Alexander Smit pitched 6-2/3 shutout innings in an 8-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday night. Zack Cozart and Juan Francisco each had three hits to pace the Dayton attack at Fifth Third Field. Eight of the fourteen hits Dayton had in the game went for extra bases.

Justin Turner gave the Dragons (20-18 second half, 64-44 overall) a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. Turner lifted a 1-1 pitch to rightcenter field for his tenth home run of the season.

Reed Eastley gave the Rattlers a chance to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. He doubled with one out to reach base in his 38th consecutive game. But, he was left stranded when the inning ended.

Then, Dayton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning and Turner figured into the scoring. Cozart doubled with one out and was still at second with two outs. Turner sent a grounder into the hole at short. Juan Diaz ranged over and made a backhand play. However, the throw to first was low and could not be dug out by Eastley. Turner reached on the infield single and Cozart scored the unearned run on the error.

The Dragons added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Parker hit a leadoff home run to start the inning. A two-out RBI double Eddy Rodriguez made it 4-0 Dayton.

Smit came out for the seventh inning and left after getting the second out. Smit walked one, struck out four, and allowed five hits to earn the win.

Francisco launched his sixteenth homer of the season on the first pitch he saw from Justin Souza in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Cozart drilled a three-run homer deep to leftcenter off Drew Fiorenza in the bottom of the eighth. The homer was Cozart's third hit of the night and his first homer as a professional.

Wisconsin (12-25, 34-71) avoided the shutout with a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth off Marcos Mateo. The loss dropped Wisconsin to a season low 37 games under .500.

The Rattlers and Dragons wrap up their series on Thursday night. Ricky Orta (3-4, 5.06) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Dayton will send Jamie Arneson (1-2, 3.82) to the mound. Game time is 6:00pm CDT.
