Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Antone DeJesus ran his hitting streak to 10 games on Wednesday night, but it was not enough as the Swing of the Quad Cities were shutout by the South Bend Silver Hawks, 6-0, and Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
Quad Cities (22-15, 60-46) dropped their second ballgame in a row after extending their winning streak to six with a win on Monday night, and will look to salvage a split in the series finale on Thursday. South Bend (20-18, 54-54) slugged two more homers in the victory and has belted five dingers in the last two games.
The Silver Hawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Brad Miller led off the frame with his 19th homer of the year, a solo shot to left that tied him for the league-lead with Clinton's Mauro Gomez, putting South Bend ahead, 1-0.
From there, a pitcher's duel took over.
Cesar Valdez (8-6) tossed six shutout frames to lead the Silver Hawks, striking out seven while scattering five hits to pick up the win. He worked around leadoff baserunners in three of his first four innings, stranding five men on base over the course of his outing.
Meanwhile, Brandon Dickson (8-6) allowed just one hit - the Miller homer - through his first five innings of work. In the bottom of the sixth, however, South Bend blew the game open.
Matt Oxendine led off the frame with a double, and after a single and an error South Bend had the bases loaded with nobody out. Dickson got the next batter to pop out to shallow left, but Miller followed with a line-drive single that plated two runs, and Daniel Perales reached on a fielder's choice groundout to drive in a third. Steve Mena promptly capped the rally, slugging a two-run homer to left that chased Dickson from the contest. Mena's second homer in as many games put the finishing touches on a five-run inning and gave the Silver Hawks a 6-0 lead.
Reliever Jason Urquidez (1) entered in the seventh and tossed the final three innings for South Bend. He allowed three hits but no runs to complete the shutout, earning his first save of the season.
Early on, Antone DeJesus extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a first-inning single. The 21-year-old leadoff hitter from Ohio went 2-3 on the night, and is hitting .389 with 13 runs, seven RBI, and nine walks during the stretch that began on July 22. DeJesus, selected by the Cardinals in the 16th round of the 2007 draft out of the University of Kentucky, tied Brandon Buckman (May 1-11) and Tony Cruz (July 17-27) for the longest hitting streaks by a Swing player this season.
