August 1, 2007 - Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza picked up his first Kernels win of the 2007 on Wednesday afternoon as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 5-1, in front of 2.353 fans at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing on Wednesday afternoon.

Mendoza (1-3) scattered five hits over five innings and allowed an unearned run as Blake Holler and Warner Madrigal combined to pitch four innings of scoreless relief and strike out seven.

The Kernels had 10 hits on the day as Abel Nieves was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Hank Conger was 2 for 5 with an RBI, Mark Trumbo was 2 for 4 and Matt Sweeney was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Lansing starter Ray Gonzalez (5-5) gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out six over five innings pitched.

The Kernels added to their league-leading stolen base total as Wil Ortiz and Nieves had one swipe each to raise the season total to 158 stolen bases.

With the win, the Kernels improve to 18-20 in the MWL second half and 56-51 overall as Lansing drops to 22-17 and 57-50. The final game in this four game series will be Thursday night at 6 pm and David Herndon (8-7) starts for the Kernels.
