Great Lakes Loons News Release
A pair of homeruns doomed the Great Lakes Loons Wednesday night as they lost to the Clinton LumberKings in front of 4,564 fans by a score of 5-3.
The Loons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the ballgame thanks to RBI singles by catcher Juan Apodaca and shortstop Francisco Lizarraga. In the sixth, right-fielder Scott Van Slyke would add another RBI-single to score Josh Bell to make it 3-0 in favor of the Loons.
But in the seventh, Loons reliever Arismendy Castillo would watch the flood gates open. After retiring the first batter of the inning, the right-hander allowed a walk, RBI-double, and two-run home run to Chris Kemp to tie the game at three. Then with two outs, Castillo was tagged for another round-tripper. Clinton catcher Hunter Harrigan laced a line drive home run to left-field to give the LumberKings a 4-3 lead. Clinton would add an insurance run in the eighth when Loons second baseman Juan Rivera watched a potential-inning ending double play bounce between his legs and into right field, scoring Mauro Gomez to make it 5-3.
James Adkins started and pitched well in limited action for the Loons. The Dodgers' 2007 first-round pick went three scoreless innings while striking out four. Loons manager Lance Parrish was pleased with his left-handers short performance.
"I thought he pitched his best baseball of the season tonight," Parrish said. "He had a good breaking ball working for him, I was very pleased with how he pitched."
Clinton starter Kasey Kiker (5-3) got his fifth win of the season pitching six innings while keeping the Loons offense in check allowing three runs. Josh Lueke pitched the final 1.2 innings to pick up his third save of the season.
Arismendy Castillo (2-8) gave up the home runs to Kemp and Harrigan to pick up his eighth loss of the year.
The Loons-LumberKings series concludes Thursday night. Game time is 7:05pm. Paul Coleman is scheduled to get the start for the Loons. It's Instant Vacation Night, presented by Ashman Court Hotel. Tickets are available by calling 989-837-BALL or by visiting Loons.com.
