Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Portland, ME - Iggy Suarez snapped a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 9th inning with a bases loaded single down the left-field line, giving the Portland Sea Dogs (63-57) a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Altoona Curve (55-69) on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. Portland snaps a 4-game losing streak at home and holds a 2-game lead over the Binghamton Mets (lost at Reading) and Connecticut Defenders (won at Akron) for the second playoff spot in the Northern Division.

Altoona closer Ronald Belisario blew his second consecutive save, allowing two runs in the 9th inning. Josh Reddick tied the game with an RBI double over the right fielder, scoring Mark Wagner.

Portland reliever Carlos Vasquez earned his second win of the season for Portland, working one scoreless inning and two strikeouts.

Before the 9th inning rally for the Curve, Portland starter Adam Mills (ND) left the game after seven strong innings. He was relieved by Richie Lentz who allowed three runs on three hits in just one inning of work.

Lentz began with a lead-off walk to C Steve Lerud. The ‘Dogs then had trouble turning a double-play off the bat of 3B Jason Bowers, who would reach on a fielder's choice and advance to second on Ryan Khoury's throwing error. Angel Gonzalez would then single before Shelby Ford smacked a 2-run triple to tie the game at 2-2. Then with Ford at 3rd, former Trenton Thunder Jose Tabata delivered his own triple to put Altoona up 3-2. Lentz would eventually get out of the inning.

Lentz's outing followed up his relief appearance Saturday when he gave up a three-run homerun to the first batter he faced, Connecticut's Pablo Sandoval, in a 5-4 Sea Dogs loss. This outing robbed Mills of his first win of the season. The right-hander limited the Curve to just three hits over seven strong innings. He would not walk a batter and allowed just one runner to reach second base. He finished his outing in style, at one point retiring 16 straight and 17 of the final 18 batters he faced.

He left the game with Portland leading heading after seven innings. DH Lars Anderson lined his 4th homerun of the season into the Sea Dogs bullpen to give Portland a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 7th. Altoona's starter, Dan Reichert (ND) would leave the game before the seventh was over, giving the ball to Moises Robles. Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Matt Capps, on a rehab assignment, worked a perfect 8th and recorded two strikeouts.

Portland and Altoona will continue their three-game series Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. LHP Kris Johnson (7-7, 3.46) will start for Portland against Altoona RHP Derek Hankins (1-8, 4.73). First pitch is schedule for 7:00 p.m. Pre-game coverage with Mike Antonellis and Tom Gauthier begins at 6:40 p.m. on the US Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network.

Notes: Anderson's homerun was his first at home and his fourth in the last nine days...He's driven in a team-best 14 runs during that stretch...Adam Mills became the first pitcher since Michael Bowden (June 24) to pitch seven innings.
