Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - Sebastien Boucher led off the game with his first of two homeruns and the Baysox never looked back, taking the opener of a three-game set in Trenton, 6-2 Tuesday night. Brad Bergesen worked 6.1 strong innings to win his 15th game of the season, breaking a Baysox franchise record. Bergesen allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two on his way to earning his 15th win in just 20 starts. With the victory, the Baysox pulled even with Akron for first place in the Southern Division.
Boucher's blast put the Baysox on top and they looked for more in the top of the first inning. Carlos Rojas hit an infield single to third base but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Nolan Reimold. With Reimold on first and one away, Matt Wieters legged out his first triple of the year to score Reimold and give Bowie a 2-0 lead.
The Thunder got one run back in the bottom of the second inning. Francisco Cervelli drew a one-out walk off Bergesen and Cody Ehlers drove a double into the gap in right-center field to plate Cervelli and cut the Baysox lead to 2-1.
The Baysox got their insurance in the top of the fifth thanks to another big blow from Sebastien Boucher. Blake Davis was hit by pitch to lead off the inning and Boucher crushed his second homerun of the night, a monster two-run drive to center field. With one out, Nolan Reimold and Matt Wieters hit back-to-back doubles to score another run and make the score 5-1 Baysox.
Bergesen retired the leadoff man in the bottom of the seventh but then conceded a walk and a single before being pulled from the game. Felix Romero came on to take over and gave up a single to James Cooper that scored Ehlers to cut the Bowie lead to three. Romero settled down and retired the next two batters without incident to end the threat.
The Baysox tacked on another run in the top of the eighth. Ryan Finan led off with a double to right field and Jeff Nettles was hit by pitch. Mike Rodriguez brought Finan home with a single to right field to give Bowie a 6-2 lead.
Romero worked another 2.0 shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out two on the way to an eight-out save, his first of the season. With the victory, the Baysox improve to 72-52, tied with Akron for first place atop the Southern Division. The Baysox look to take over control of first place Wednesday in Trenton, with RHP David Hernandez (7-4, 2.55 ERA) going up against Thunder RHP George Kontos (4-10, 3.58 ERA).
The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship. Playoff tickets are available beginning August 12th; tickets for all remaining regular season games are available on www.baysox.com or by calling the box office at (301) 464-4865.
