Defenders Win 4th Straight 4-1 Over Akron
August 12, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
AKRON, OH- The Defenders stayed hot as Joey Martinez sparkled in a 4-1 win against the Northern Division leading Aeros on the road.
Joey Martinez' ERA is suggestive. Suggestive that he has double-digit wins and very few losses. Coming into Tuesday night's contest, Martinez was 7-9, but he looked to improve that against the Cleveland Indian affiliate Aeros.
After two scoreless innings of ball, the Defenders got right back to business. Ryan Rohlinger smacked a solo bomb over the left field fence in the third to make it 1-0, Defs.
Pablo Sandoval started the fourth with a single, Simon Klink went down looking and Adam Witter delivered a two-run round-tripper as Connecticut got a little more comfortable with a 3-0 lead.
The top half of the fifth featured another run for the Defenders as Olmo Rosario laced a single up the middle to score Kyle Haines who walked with one out to spark the short rally. Halfway done in Akron, the Defs held a 4-0 advantage.
Akron put a scare into the Defenders in the last of the eighth as a run came in on a double with Adam Cowart toeing the rubber in relief of Martinez. With the bases full and one away, Justin Hedrick took over the pitching duties and was brilliant. He fanned the first Aero he saw and forced slugger Wes Hodges into a groundout to short. Through eight in Akron, the Defenders led, 4-1.
Hedrick stayed on the hill to pitch the ninth and he continued to pitch effectively. After giving up a lead-off single, Hedrick settled down to retire the side. The tidy ninth gave Hedrick is ninth save in as many tries, Martinez improved to 8-9 and Akron hurler Steven Wright dropped his second.
The Defenders and Aeros will squabble on Wednesday in Akron at 7:05pm. Catch every pitch on the Defenders Radio Network or on ctdefenders.com, with coverage starting at 6:50pm.
