Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Iggy Suarez's throwing error on an infield hit by Mike Kinkade, scored the game-winner run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Trenton took the series opener from Portland, 4-3 on Tuesday night at Waterfront Park.
The Sea Dogs had their 8-game road winning streak snapped and have dropped six of their last seven contests.
Charlie Manning (1-0) worked a scoreless frame in the 10th to earn his 15th career win for Trenton. Kyle Jackson (4-8) suffered the loss, despite allowing an unearned run on two hits, two strikeouts in one inning pitched.
The rally in the bottom of the 10th inning started when Miranda doubled off the glove off centerfielder Bubba Bell, who almost made a diving catch. Suarez fielded the ground ball hit by Kinkade right in front of the second base bag but launched the throw into Trenton's dugout.
Chris Smith earned his first quality start of the season for the Portland. The righty hurled six strong innings on six hits and three runs. Hunter Jones worked two and 1/3 scoreless on four hits and two strikeouts. With the game tied at three in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jones allowed back-to-back singles but got a double play and a strikeout to end the threat.
The Sea Dogs fell behind 2-0 in the second inning on an RBI double by Cody Ehlers and a sacrifice fly by P.J. Pilittere. Portland came right back to tie the game in the third inning on Bell's 2-run double with two outs. Trenton starter Tyler Clippard was activated from the disabled list before the game and pitched just two and 2/3 innings on one hit and two runs. Jason Jones allowed the go ahead run in the fourth inning on Jeff Natale's sacrifice fly but Gabriel Lopez tied the game at three with a run-scoring double in Trenton's half of the fourth.
Trenton pitchers retired 14 straight batters after Iggy Suarez extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the fourth inning. Portland had two runners after the fifth inning against Jones, Kevin Whelan (2 perfect innings), Justin Pope and Manning.
With the loss, the Sea Dogs fall eight games behind Trenton for the top spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division. Portland and Trenton play the middle game of their series on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park - Game time is 7:05
