Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox picked up their six game homestand Tuesday, following an off day on Monday, welcoming Connecticut to town. Radhames Liz was on the mound, going for his 11th win of the season and the Baysox were looking to extend their current win streak to eight games with a series opening win.
The Baysox got on the board in the third inning when Eastern League RBI leader, Oscar Salazar, slapped a single to right, scoring Ruddy Yan and Luis Hernandez, for a 2-0 Baysox lead.
The Baysox got back on the board in the bottom of the six on a Luis Jimenez home run, a two-run shot, pushing the Baysox lead to, 4-0.
Radhames Liz was superb on the mound and was on his way to pitching another no-hitter into the eighth inning. Connecticut finally came through though with a hit with one out in the eighth, when Simon Klink singled to shortstop and Luis Hernandez's throw to first was a bit high, to break up the no-no. Dayton Buller then homered off of Liz, who was a bit rattled to get Connecticut to, 4-2. Liz then regained his composure, getting the next two batters, Trey Webb and Carlos Sosa down on strikes swinging. Liz finished the game with a season 14 strikeouts, just two shy of the Baysox record of 16 K's set by Jimmy Haynes on September 1, 1994.
Bob McCrory came on in the ninth and converted his 11th save of the season, giving up two hits, but McCrory pulled through getting Julio Cordido to strike out swinging for the final out, securing the Baysox victory, 4-2.
With the win Radhames Liz moved to (11-4) on the season, going eight innings, giving up only two-hits and two runs. RHP Garrett Broshuis took the loss to drop to (2-15) on the season. Oscar Salazar had two hits on the night to lead the Baysox.
The Baysox head into the middle game of the series on Wednesday just one win away from tying their season long win streak of nine games. RHP Fredy Deza will get the start for the Baysox squaring off against RHP Brooks McNiven for the Defenders, first pitch set for 7:05 pm.
With the win the Baysox improved to (65-56) on the season, moving ahead of Altoona for third place in the EL Southern Division, 5.5 games behind Akron for first place in the EL Southern Division.
