Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Chris Collins scored his first professional goal as the Ice Dogs lost 2-1 in the 2006-07 season opener at the Long Beach Arena on Friday night.

Both teams played a competitive first period with both goaltenders stopping 12 shots a piece after twenty minutes of play.

Idaho got the scoring going early in the second period when Steelheads forward Scott Burt scored on the power play from Johnson and Gabinet at 3:27 of the second period. The lead did not last long as Chris Collins intercepted a pass from Steelheads goaltender Steve Silverthorn and backhanded the puck into the empty net at 7:49 of the second period. Shots after two periods were 26-24 Long Beach.

The Steelheads came out flying in the third period and took charge deep in the Ice Dogs zone. With Alex Kim in the box, Derek Nesbit slammed in a rebound on the power play at the far side post to beat Ice Dog net-minder Jeff Weber at 4:01 to give the Steelheads a 2-1 lead. That would be all the scoring as the Steelheads closed up shop the rest of the period.

Notes: The Ice Dogs went 0-8 on the PP. Steelheads went 2-7. Attendance was 4,632 at the Long Beach Arena. Weber stopped 38 of 40 shots in net for Long Beach. Next game will be on Sunday, October 22, vs. the Bakersfield Condors. Game time is 5PM at the Long Beach Arena. Call 562-ICE-DOGS for ticket information.
