Dayton Bombers News Release
Toledo,, OH- The Dayton Bombers and the Toledo Storm were scoreless through two periods of play tonight at the Sports Arena, but late in the third period Toledo broke the scoreless tie and later added an empty net goal to defeat the Bombers by a final of 2-0.
Neither team knew what to expect coming into tonight's 2006-07 season opener. Toledo has been talked about as one of the elite teams in the North Division coming into the season. The Bombers also are getting some recognition from other coaches and scouts that had a chance to watch them in preseason play. As always, it was a different atmosphere in the Toledo Sports Arena with the raising of the banner ceremony, the Bombers were forced to focus early and often right from the opening face-off, and they responded to that challenge immediately.
Dayton would receive five power plays in the first period, four of them coming within the first ten minutes of the hockey game. The Bombers would spend almost the entire time with the man advantage in the Toledo zone and they fired at will from the point, the circles and the slot area on Toledo starter Logan Koopmans. Koopmans kept the Bombers off the board and Bombers starter Adam Berkhoel did the same to Toledo and after 20 minutes of play, both teams were scoreless.
The second period was a mirror image to the first. Once again the Bombers would continue to put pressure on the Toledo net, with or without a man advantage. Despite the constant pressure and strong presence on the forecheck, the Bombers still could not get anything past Koopmans. Adam Berkhoel was also the story in the second, making some key saves late in the period to keep the game scoreless after 40 minutes of play.
At the beginning of the third period, the Bombers had a number of chances on the power play, but just could not make it happen. Late in the third period with less than seven minutes to go, Toledo rookie Jamie Tardiff snuck a quick wrist shot under the stick side arm of Berkhoel to give the Storm that all important first goal. The Bombers were called for three penalties following that goal and never gave themselves a chance to try to tie it up. Ken Magowan would add an empty netter with: 14 seconds left and Toledo would go on to defeat the Bombers 2-0, despite the Bombers out shooting the Storm 33-31.
