Long Beach, CA - Derek Nesbitt scored the game-winning, power play goal in the third period, and Steve Silverthorn made 32 saves, as the Steelheads downed the Long Beach Ice Dogs, 2-1, in the season opener for both clubs on Friday night from the Long Beach Arena.

Early in the third period, the Steelheads man advantage struck for the second time. At 4:01 of the frame, team captain Marty Flichel found Nesbitt wide open at the far post, and he slammed it home for his first goal as a Steelhead. Defenseman Cody Blanshan got the other assist.

After a scoreless first period, the Steelheads broke the tie on a power play goal at 3:27 of the second period on a marker by veteran winger Scott Burt. After some sustained puck possession in the offensive zone, Mike Gabinet slipped the puck down low to rookie forward Charlie Johnson who fed Scott Burt in the slot. Burt was able to beat Jeff Weber (38 saves) five-hole for the Steelheads first goal of the season.

The Ice Dogs were able to tie the game on a giveaway by Silverthorn (32 saves). From behind his own net, the Owen Sound, Ontario native sent the puck directly to Ice Dogs' rookie Chris Collins who pushed it into the open cage for his first professional goal.

Both teams registered 12 shots in the opening stanza.

The final shots were 40-33 in favor of the Steelheads, as both teams finished with eight power plays.
