Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (1-1-0) used two short-handed goals and a pair of power play tally to upend the Texas Wildcatters (1-1-0) by a final score of 5-2 on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,841 at Germain Arena.
Five different goal scorers helped push the Everblades to their first win of the season and goaltender David Shantz earned his first professional win by stopping 27 of 29 shots. Vince Bellissimo opened the scoring for the Everblades notching his first goal of the season at 10:08 of the first period. Texas responded with a power play goal by Paul Albers at 18:01 of the opening frame to tie the game. The Everblades however came up with a late first period goal of their own when Brad Parsons notched a 5-on-3 power play goal with just 42 second remaining in the period.
For the second time in the game, Texas answered back when Mike Bayrack beat Shantz with a quick one-time goal from the slot at 7:06 of the second period, but Florida took the lead for good when Jonathan Lehun scored the first of two short-handed goals for the Everblades at 13:39 of the second period beating Texas net minder Matt Yeats with a wrist shot from the right circle.
Leading 3-2 heading into the third period, the Everblades added some insurance on Derek Damon's first professional goal at 4:23. The goal was Florida's second power play goal of the night. Brent McDonald later sealed the win for the Everblades with his first goal of the season and the team's second short-handed tally at 17:23 of the final period.
Shantz played well in his first professional game to earn the win, while Yeats fell to 1-1-0 after allowing five goals on 27 Florida shots.
On the power play the Everblades closed out the night 2-for-8 while the Wildcatters finished the game 1-for-11 with the man advantage.
