Trenton Devils News Release
READING, PA (October 21, 2006) - The Trenton Titans scored two goals eleven seconds apart in the waning minutes of regulation to force overtime and gain an eventual 5-4 shootout victory against the Reading Royals in front of 7,215 at the Sovereign Center.
With the Titans trailing 4-2 with less than three minutes remaining, Benoit Mondou took a nice feed from Scott Sheppard beating Reading goalie Ryan Munce to far post and starting the Trenton down the comeback trail. Moments later it was Jim Henkel firing a wrist shot that snuck past the outstretched leg pad of Reading goalie Ryan Munce to knot the score at 4-4.
In the shootout Titans goalie Joel Martin stopped all but one Royals shooter, while Sheppard and John Laliberte notched goals to seal the victory.
Reading was able to strike early and often in their home opener in staking a 2-0 lead five and a half minutes into first. Arpad Mihaly lit the lamp on the power play 1:30 before a centering pass by Dave Borelli deflected off a skate and past Martin.
At 8:14 of the first, Troy Riddle would cut Reading's edge back to one goal blasting a slapshot past Yutaka Fukufuji, who left the game in the second period due to injury.
The lead for the Royals went back to two goals on the only marker of the second period, Jon Francisco's first goal of the year coming at 4:25.
In the final frame Les Haggett and Mihaly traded goals to make the score 4-2 with just 2:46 left in regulation and the game seemingly out of reach for the Titans.
Trenton finished 9-for-10 on the penalty kill, while Martin made 34 to record his first win as a Titan.
The Titans finish their weekend of play at 4pm tomorrow, October 22, against the Johnstown Chiefs at the Sovereign Bank Arena. The Titans' broadcast will air live on WBCB1490-AM following the conclusion of the Philadelphia Eagles/Tampa Bay Buccaneers game.
The Trenton Titans open the 2006-07 season on Friday, October 20 at 7:30pm against the Reading Royals at the Sovereign Bank Arena. For tickets call a Titans Ticket Representative at (609) 599-9500.
