Dogs Comeback Falls Short, Wingnuts Take Opener 7-6

Rosemont, Ill. - Joe Benson and Stephen Perez homered, but a Dogs comeback fell just short as Chicago was unable to overcome a seven-run Wichita third inning in a 7-6 loss to the Wingnuts Monday night at Impact Field.

Benson's homer drove in two in the bottom of the first for the Dogs to give Chicago starter Jared Carkuff a lead to work with in his first professional start. However, seven runs on seven consecutive Wingnut hits in the top of third spoiled Carkuff's outing and gave Wichita a lead they would never relinquish.

The Wingnuts sent eleven men to the plate in the frame, with Hunter Clanin cashing in an RBI single, and Zach Nehrir and Tony Thomas adding two-run singles. The inning featured just one extra-base hit for Wichita, but matched the most runs given up in a single inning all year by the Dogs.

Chicago began their slow climb back with a two-run double from Benson in the bottom of the third inning. The hit capped a two-out Dogs rally and scored Edwin Arroyo and Treysen Vavra to cut the Chicago deficit to 7-4.

The Dogs tacked on another run on a Perez ground out in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Wichita lead to 7-5. With Wichita starter Jordan Cooper out of the game after six innings, Perez then clubbed his first home run of the year off Wingnut reliever Felix Carvallo to cut the deficit to just one run.

Wichita then turned to Austin Boyle and Daniel Tillman to secure the final seven outs, as the two combined to allow just one baserunner over the final two and one-third innings.

Carkuff took the loss for the Dogs, pitching four innings, and allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk. Six of the runs were earned, elevating the right-hander's season earned run average from 1.78 to 3.15. The Chicago bullpen worked the final five innings scoreless allowing only two baserunners.

Benson's four RBI marked just the fourth four-RBI game in Chicago franchise history, and Perez extended his on-base streak to 16 games with his home run.

The Dogs and Wingnuts will play game two of a four-game series Tuesday night on Bark in the Park night at Impact Field. Left-hander Scott Barnes takes the mound for Chicago, while right-hander Charlie Gillies gets the nod for Wichita.
