Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (29-40) lost 6-3 to the Lincoln Saltdogs (32-35) at Haymarket Park on Tuesday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Saltdogs rallied for six runs. TJ Bennett put Lincoln on the board with a leadoff, solo home run to left-centre field. After Dashenko Ricardo struck out, singles from Alex Glenn and Cesar Valera put the tying runs on base. Christian Ibarra hit a groundball to Matt McCann at shortstop. McCann gloved the ball and flipped to second to force out Valera. Tucker Nathans' return throw to first broke off the glove of Jordan Ebert . Glenn came around to score the Saltdogs' second run on the play. Jamey Smart walked with two outs, and the Saltdogs tied the game on a broken bat single to centre from Brandon Jacobs. Randolph Oduber followed with a three-run home run to right-centre.
Former Major Leaguer Shairon Martis relieved Lincoln starter Michael Tamburino in the top of the sixth and pitched three shutout innings of relief.
Brandon Bingel and Cameron McVey combined for three scoreless relief innings to keep the Goldeyes within three runs. McVey struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth.
Jose Jose worked around a McCann single in the top of the ninth to earn his eighth save of the year.
Tamburino (5-5) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Tamburino walked one and struck out five.
Kevin McGovern (3-8) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing six earned runs on nine hits over five. McGovern walked two and struck out five.
The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Josh Romanski led off with a double to right-centre and scored when Josh Mazzola doubled to right-centre. Two batters later, Ebert grounded a single to centre that scored Mazzola.
Tyler Baker led off the top of the fifth with a single to right-centre and went first to third on a bloop single to right from Reggie Abercrombie. Romanski lifted a sacrifice fly to centre that plated Baker and stretched Winnipeg's lead to 3-0.
The series continues Wednesday evening at 6:45 p.m. Alex Boshers (3-7, 5.58) faces left-hander Kyle Kinman (4-2, 4.20). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
