Explorers Acquire Blake Schmit from Sioux Falls

Cleburne, TX - The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have acquired Sioux Falls Canaries infielder Blake Schmit from the Sioux Falls Canaries for three players to be named later.

Schmit has been with Sioux Falls since 2016. With the Canaries for those three seasons the 26 year old put together a .293 average as he collected 281 hits. Smacking 39 doubles, scoring 142 runs, and driving in 98 more. Schmit also stole a total of 49 bags stealing an even 20 bases in both 2016 and 2017.

During the 2018 season Schmit had put together a .280 average with 1 home run, 25 RBI's and 27 runs scored through 59 games with the Birds. He also had 14 doubles, and 9 stolen bases.

Schmit played his college ball at the University of Maryland, he was then drafted by the Minnesota Twins organization in the 26th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. He made it as far as high-A ball with the Fort Myers Miracle. With the Twins affiliates for a total of two seasons Schmit batted .210 with 2 home runs, 22 RBI's and 23 runs in 58 games played.

With the move The Explorers also have announced that Jay Austin has signed with Quintana Roo of the Mexican League. Austin this season for Sioux City was batting .364, with an on base percentage of .419. He also had scored 43 runs, drove in 36 RBI's while stealing 13 bases. He also walked 23 times and struck out just 14. Austin's .364 average was good for second in the American Association behind Todd Cunningham of Kansas City who sports a .376 average.

The Explorers also announced the release of RHP Will Lamarche. Lamarche for the Explorers was 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 8 appearances out of the bullpen.

Sioux City is in Texas for a six game road trip starting with the Cleburne Railroaders for a two game series beginning on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:06 for both Tuesday and Wednesday. The Explorers will then begin a four game series with the Texas Airhogs on Thursday before returning to Sioux City for a seven game home stand beginning on August 6th.
