Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

The Sioux Falls Canaries have traded shortstop Blake Schmit to the Sioux City Explorers in exchange for three players to be named later, the team announced Tuesday.

Schmit put together a quality 2018 season, his third year with the Canaries. He hit .280/.338/.352 with 25 runs batted in.

The 26-year-old hit a combined .297/.364/.388 for the Birds in 2016-17, making a mark with his infield defense and speed at the leadoff position. Schmit was a 26th-round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 2014 MLB draft, spending two years in their organization.

Canaries manager Mike Meyer says the trade allows infielder Patrick Fiala and outfielder Mike Hart to get more playing time.

"Pat and Mike can continue their development and get as many at-bats as they can," Meyer said. "I think it makes us better because they're improving and swinging the bats well."

The Canaries will likely get their return from Sioux City ahead of next season.

"We want to get better now and get better later," Meyer said. "This also makes us better in the future, getting three players."

The Canaries are back at the Birdcage this week for a three-game series with the Kansas City T-Bones. The series runs Tuesday through Thursday with games at 7 p.m. Birds fans can get their tickets at the Sioux Falls Stadium box office or by calling 336-6060.
